Extreme Heat Wave Hits Israel With Potential 30-Year Temperature Record
Israel is set to experience an extreme heat wave starting Friday, peaking over the weekend with temperatures possibly reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius in the Sea of Galilee and northern valleys. This surge in heat, accompanied by dry conditions and strong winds in the north, raises concerns about wildfire risks. Dr. Amir Givati, head of the Meteorological Service, noted that if the forecast holds, it could break the 30-year-old temperature record of 46.8 degrees set in Beit HaYada on August 9, 1998.
The weather forecast for Thursday night predicts clear to partly cloudy skies, with localized fog possibly reducing visibility in parts of the southern coastal plain, southern Shfela, and northwest Negev. Temperatures will rise slightly on Friday, becoming hot to very hot in the mountains and inland areas, while remaining mild along the coastal plain. Heavy to extreme heat stress is expected across most of the country, with the most intense heat in southern Golan, northern valleys, Lower Galilee, Sea of Galilee basin, Dead Sea coast, Jordan Valley, Arava, Judean Desert, and eastern Negev.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the heat will persist with heavy to extreme heat stress nationwide. The coastal plain will remain mild, but the interior and mountainous regions will experience very hot to scorching conditions. Specific temperature forecasts include Jerusalem ranging from 18 degrees Celsius at night to 34 degrees during the day, Tel Aviv from 24 to 32 degrees, Haifa 24 to 31 degrees, and Eilat reaching up to 43 degrees.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely due to the increased risk of wildfires and health impacts from the intense heat. Residents are advised to take precautions during this period of extreme weather.
