IDF Eliminates Two Hamas Operatives Involved in Hostage Holding

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the elimination of two Hamas operatives in separate strikes in Gaza City earlier this week. One of the operatives, Hassan Mahmoud Ziyam, identified by the IDF as a commander in Hamas's military wing, was allegedly involved in the October 7th massacre and subsequently held four hostages. The IDF stated Ziyam was killed in an airstrike on Wednesday and was involved in holding Amit Soussana, Keith Siegel, Aviva Siegel, and Dafna Elyakim captive.

The IDF's announcement follows a similar strike last week that eliminated another Hamas commander, Mahmoud Abdel Fattah Awad, who the military claims was involved in holding seven hostages. Combined, the two commanders were allegedly involved in holding a total of eleven hostages. Awad was reportedly killed in an airstrike after being designated an immediate threat.

According to the IDF, both Ziyam and Awad were active in promoting attacks against Israeli forces and civilians and in rebuilding Hamas's capabilities, in violation of a ceasefire. The second operative killed this week, Adham Zahi Salim Ziara, was described as an operative in Hamas's military wing who was involved in promoting attacks and planting explosives near the Gaza border fence.
