IDF Eliminates Two Hamas Operatives Involved in Hostage Holding

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the elimination of two Hamas operatives in separate strikes in Gaza City earlier this week. One of the operatives, Hassan Mahmoud Ziam, identified by the IDF as a commander in Hamas's military wing, allegedly participated in the October 7th massacre and was involved in holding four hostages. Ziam was killed in an airstrike on Wednesday, and the IDF stated he was involved in the captivity of Amit Sosana, Keith Siegel, Aviva Siegel, and Dafna Elyakim.

The IDF's announcement follows a similar strike from the previous day, which eliminated another Hamas commander, Mahmoud Abdel Fattah Awad. According to the IDF, Awad was involved in holding seven hostages: Daniela Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbrecher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor. The military stated that Awad was killed in an airstrike after being designated an immediate threat.

Collectively, the IDF claims these two commanders were involved in holding a total of eleven hostages. Both operatives were also accused by the IDF of promoting attacks against Israeli forces and civilians and attempting to rebuild Hamas's capabilities, in violation of a ceasefire. The second operative killed, Adham Zahi Salim Ziara, was described as an activist in Hamas's military wing who was eliminated in a strike on Tuesday.
