IDF Conducts Surprise Nationwide Readiness Drill Ahead of Holidays

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a surprise, nationwide readiness drill early Sunday morning, codenamed "Dawn Break 2.0," under the directive of Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi. The exercise is designed to test the preparedness of the General Staff and main commands to handle a complex, multi-front, and large-scale emergent event.

The drill aims to assess the IDF's readiness for various surprise operational scenarios, the activation of reserves and emergency forces, decision-making processes, and operational responses across all levels, from regional commands and branches to the General Staff. It is part of the ongoing preparations and strengthening of defenses ahead of the upcoming holiday season.

As part of the surprise exercise, commanders from all commands, directorates, and branches were mobilized, along with reserve forces. The Chief of Staff is observing the drill's management from the IDF's command post and in the field. The IDF stated that heightened activity of security forces and aircraft would be noticeable across the country, assuring the public there was no concern of an actual security incident.

The exercise includes simulating the airborne deployment of a battalion and conducting a drill at the Ground Forces Training Center. All reserve and emergency forces are being mobilized to test readiness and response capabilities for emergent events. Commands from the General Staff down to regional levels are practicing scenarios involving their deployment and management of sudden incidents.

This drill is part of the IDF's continuous process to reinforce its foundations, fitness, and readiness at all levels. It incorporates operational plans and lessons learned from recent combat and the events of October 7. Regular and reserve officers from the IDF's comptroller unit are inspecting units and commands to assess their operational fitness and readiness. The exercise is part of the Operations Directorate's planned training schedule for 2026 and was kept highly classified to ensure surprise, even among senior officers.
