Israeli Arab Suspected of Aiding Hamas, Contacting Iranian Intelligence

The story · English

The Shin Bet security agency and the police announced Friday that Sultan Abu Alheiga, a 31-year-old resident of Tamra, was arrested late last month on suspicion of attempting to aid Hamas and contacting Iranian intelligence.

Following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet and the Northern District's Central Unit, it was revealed that Abu Alheiga allegedly contacted the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military wing, multiple times with the intention of covertly assisting them.

During the investigation, security officials also discovered that Abu Alheiga had established contact with Iranian intelligence operatives. He was apprehended before he could carry out any missions for them.

An indictment for security offenses is expected to be filed against Abu Alheiga in the Haifa District Court. The Shin Bet and police stated they "view with great severity any involvement of Israeli citizens in activities that endanger the security of the state and its citizens, and will continue to act within their legal authority and employ all available means to prosecute those involved in such activities."
