Israeli Arab Arrested for Hamas, Iranian Intelligence Ties
An indictment for security offenses is set to be filed against Sultan Abu Alheja, a 31-year-old Arab Israeli from Tamra, who allegedly contacted Hamas's military wing and Iranian intelligence officials. Abu Alheja was arrested on August 28, 2026, in a joint operation by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and the Northern District Police's Central Unit, with the arrest carried out by the Northern Border Police.
Investigations by the Shin Bet and police revealed that Abu Alheja had repeatedly approached the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, seeking to covertly assist the organization. The investigation also uncovered his contact with Iranian intelligence operatives.
According to security officials, Abu Alheja was apprehended before he could carry out any missions for these entities. The indictment will be filed by the Haifa District Prosecutor's Office.
In a joint statement, the Shin Bet and Israel Police emphasized the severity of any Israeli citizen's involvement in activities endangering national security and pledged to use all available means to prosecute those involved.
