Israeli Arab Charged with Aiding Hamas and Iranian Intelligence

An Israeli Arab man from the northern city of Tamra is facing security offense charges for allegedly attempting to assist the Hamas terror organization and contacting Iranian intelligence officials. Sultan Abu Alheijaa, 31, was arrested on August 28, 2026, as part of a joint investigation by the Shin Bet security agency and the Northern District's special investigative unit (Yamar Tzafon).

According to a statement from the security bodies, Abu Alheijaa repeatedly contacted the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military wing in the Gaza Strip, initiating contact himself and offering covert assistance. The specific nature of the aid he proposed, whether Hamas responded, or if any practical connection was established, was not detailed in the statement.

In addition to his alleged dealings with Hamas, the investigation also uncovered suspicions that Abu Alheijaa made contact with Iranian intelligence elements. The full scope of these alleged interactions and their purpose remains under investigation.

Following the completion of the investigation, the Haifa District Prosecutor's Office is expected to file an indictment against Abu Alheijaa for security offenses. The arrest was carried out by the Northern National Guard forces of the Border Police (Magav), and he was subsequently interrogated by both the Shin Bet and Yamar Tzafon.
