Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Dismissed from IDF Over Oct. 7 Failures

The intelligence officer for the Gaza Division during the October 7th Hamas attacks has been permanently dismissed from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He was the last senior figure in the division's intelligence chain of command related to that sector to remain in active service. While most senior officers in the intelligence corps and Southern Command involved in the October 7th events took responsibility and resigned in the preceding months, the officer initially refused to leave his post.

Following internal investigations, the officer was moved from his position in the Gaza Division to a secondary role. However, he reportedly fought to continue his military service. The decision to end his service was finalized by senior command, leading to his removal from active duty.

The IDF stated that the decision to terminate the officer's service was made on November 23, 2025. This followed a November 2023 decision by the Chief of Staff that several senior commanders bore command responsibility for the October 7th events and that disciplinary action was warranted. Lieutenant Colonel 'Aleph', serving as the Gaza Division's intelligence officer, was among those identified as bearing command responsibility.

The process to end his service involved reviewing all relevant considerations, including the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, findings from investigations, and professional assessments of his performance failures in the period leading up to October 7th. The officer's arguments regarding his level of responsibility were also considered by an advisory committee.

The head of the Manpower Directorate ultimately decided to terminate the officer's commitment and end his service in the IDF, based on the committee's recommendations. The officer has the right to appeal this decision to the Chief of Staff.
