Gaza Division Intelligence Officer to Be Dismissed from IDF Following Oct. 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Thursday that Lieutenant Colonel A., who served as the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division on October 7, will be dismissed from the military. The decision, conveyed through standard procedure, allows the officer to appeal to the Chief of Staff. This action follows a November 2025 decision by then-Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, who determined that several senior commanders bore command responsibility for the October 7 events and warranted disciplinary measures. Lt. Col. A. was among those identified, leading to the initiation of proceedings to end his service.

Recent months have seen the completion of the process to terminate his military service. An IDF spokesperson stated that all relevant considerations were examined, including the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, findings from investigations, and expert assessments of the officer's performance failures in the period leading up to October 7. The officer's arguments regarding his level of responsibility, presented to an advisory committee, were also considered.

The central conclusion of a special expert team, led by retired Major General Sami Turgeman, which reviewed IDF investigations into the October 7 massacre, was that the events resulted from a "long-standing, multi-year systemic and organizational failure." The team, appointed by Chief of Staff Kochavi, found that the IDF possessed "high-quality and unusual intelligence" prior to the attack, indicating it did not occur due to a lack of information. The report highlighted that diverse intelligence gathered on the night of the Hamas assault, if professionally analyzed, "could and indeed should have raised a warning of significant action."
