The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Thursday the dismissal of Lieutenant Colonel A., who served as the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division on October 7. The decision follows a directive from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir from last year, which stated that senior commanders bear command responsibility for the events of October 7 and that disciplinary action should be taken.

As the division's intelligence officer, Lt. Col. A. was deemed to hold command responsibility and thus initiated a process to terminate his service. This process, which spanned several months, involved reviewing all relevant considerations, including the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, findings from investigations, and professional assessments of his performance prior to October 7. The officer's arguments regarding his level of responsibility were also considered by an advisory committee.

Ultimately, the head of the Manpower Directorate decided to terminate the officer's commitment to service in the IDF, based on the committee's recommendations. The officer has been informed of the decision and has the right to appeal to the Chief of Staff.

Earlier this year, Lt. Col. A. petitioned the court against the convening of the termination committee. In June, the court ruled that the process to end his service, initiated due to professional errors, malfunctions, and command responsibility, was conducted lawfully and within full authority. The court rejected all of the officer's claims, affirming the military's authority to initiate the termination of service for soldiers who exhibit professional and command failures, and confirmed that the officer's right to be heard was not compromised.

In June of last year, the IDF published its combat investigation of the Gaza Division (Re'im base) on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of three commanders and one soldier, with seven others wounded. An additional soldier was killed, and his father murdered at the entrance junction to the base. The investigation found that the IDF failed in its mission to defend the base due to insufficient preparation, inadequate defensive infrastructure and protection, an "rear-echelon" operational climate and culture at a forward operating base, and a defense method unsuited to these deficiencies.
