IDF Officer Leaves Military Over October 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has dismissed Lieutenant Colonel A., a former intelligence officer for the Gaza Division, in connection with failures leading up to the October 7 Hamas attacks. The head of the IDF's Manpower Directorate approved the findings of an inquiry committee and terminated the officer's contract, according to an IDF spokesperson. The committee's decision was based on a review of the Deputy Chief of Staff's conclusions, investigation results, and expert assessments, as well as the officer's own testimony and written statements.

Lieutenant Colonel A.'s name is currently under a publication ban. While the Tel Aviv District Court recently permitted its disclosure, the decision was suspended to allow for an appeal. The officer's attorney, Avi Amiram, stated his intention to appeal to the Supreme Court. The dismissal stems from the officer's command responsibility for subordinates' miscalculations and his own errors prior to the Hamas assault.

The investigation into the October 7 failures began on November 23, 2025, when then-Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir assigned responsibility to several senior officers and ordered reviews of potential measures against them. Lieutenant Colonel A. had been removed from his post as Gaza Division intelligence officer in January 2025 but continued his service in the IDF. His father previously held a senior position in the defense establishment.

IDF investigations concluded that the Gaza Division, responsible for protecting border communities, failed to provide timely warnings about the impending attack. Following the assault's commencement, units operated for hours with insufficient information, struggling to effectively counter the seizure of communities, killings, and kidnappings.
