Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Dismissed Over October 7 Failures

The intelligence officer of the Gaza Division during the October 7th Hamas attack has been permanently dismissed from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He was the last senior figure in the division's intelligence command chain to remain in active service following the failures of that day.

While most senior officials in the intelligence corps and Southern Command responsible at the time resigned, this officer initially refused to leave. Following internal investigations, he was moved from his role in the Gaza Division to a less significant position, but he continued to fight for his military service.

Ultimately, senior command decided to end his service. The IDF stated that the officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Aleph, bore command responsibility for the events as part of his role. This decision follows a November 23, 2023, determination by the Chief of Staff that several senior commanders held command responsibility and that disciplinary actions were warranted.

The process to terminate the officer's service began months ago. All relevant considerations were examined, including the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, investigation findings, and professional assessments of his functional failures leading up to October 7th. The officer's arguments regarding his level of responsibility were also considered by an advisory committee.

The Head of the Manpower Directorate made the final decision to terminate the officer's commitment to service after reviewing the committee's recommendations. The officer has been informed of the decision and has the option to appeal to the Chief of Staff.
