IDF Discharges Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Over October 7 Failures

The head of the IDF's Manpower Directorate, Major General Dudu Bar Kalippa, has decided to terminate the service of Lieutenant Colonel A., the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division on October 7. The decision follows a recommendation from the Deputy Chief of Staff and a review by an advisory committee, after the officer attempted to block the proceedings through legal action.

In November 2025, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir identified several senior commanders bearing command responsibility for the events of October 7, necessitating disciplinary action. Lt. Col. A. was among those identified due to his role as the Gaza Division's intelligence officer.

Lt. Col. A. challenged the process, leading to a legal battle. In March 2026, he petitioned the court against the committee's convening, and the court initially halted the proceedings. However, in June, the court ruled that the termination process, initiated due to professional errors, failures, and command responsibility attributed to the officer, was conducted lawfully. The court dismissed the officer's claims, affirming the IDF's authority to terminate the service of a soldier who has failed professionally and command-wise, and confirmed the officer's right to be heard was not violated.

Following the court's ruling, the administrative process resumed. The IDF stated that the review considered the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, investigation findings, and professional assessments of the officer's performance failures leading up to October 7, as well as the officer's own arguments regarding his responsibility. After the committee completed its work and submitted its recommendations, Maj. Gen. Bar Kalippa made the final decision to end Lt. Col. A.'s service.

The officer has been informed of the decision and has the option to appeal to the Chief of Staff.
