IDF Officer Responsible for Gaza Intelligence on Oct. 7 Dismissed

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has decided to terminate the service of Lieutenant Colonel A., who served as the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division on October 7. The decision follows findings from investigations into his performance in the period leading up to the Hamas attack.

The Chief of Staff determined that Lt. Col. A. bears command responsibility for the events of October 7 and that disciplinary action is warranted. The IDF announced the termination of his service after Lt. Col. A.'s prior petition to the court against the proceedings was rejected in June. The court ruled that the process of ending his service was conducted lawfully and within full authority, and that military authorities can initiate the termination of a soldier's commitment to service following professional and command failures.

Following the court's ruling, the IDF renewed the administrative process concerning the officer. An advisory committee to the Head of the Manpower Directorate reviewed the investigation findings, professional assessments of his failures prior to October 7, and the officer's arguments. Based on the committee's recommendations, the Head of the Manpower Directorate decided to end Lt. Col. A.'s service.

The officer has been informed of the decision, and the IDF noted that this is not the end of the process for him. Lt. Col. A. has the option to appeal the decision to the Chief of Staff.
