IDF Ousts Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Over October 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday the final dismissal of the Gaza Division's intelligence officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Aleph, for his role in the failures leading up to the October 7th Hamas attacks. This decision follows a series of legal proceedings and a determination by the Chief of Staff from November of the previous year that Aleph bore command responsibility for the intelligence shortcomings.

Aleph, who reportedly arrived at the division's headquarters in Re'im without his personal weapon the night before the attack and went to sleep, failed to raise the alert level or awaken combat units. He is the only officer from the operational array on October 7th who engaged in a protracted legal battle against his dismissal, refusing to accept command responsibility or resign voluntarily.

During his tenure, starting in May 2023, Aleph was exposed to Hamas's detailed attack plan, codenamed "Jericho Wall." Despite this, he dismissed warnings from an expert sergeant in Unit 8200, who alerted him that the enemy was practicing the plan in the field, calling the breach scenario "completely imaginary."

The legal process involved reviews of all considerations, including the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, investigation findings, and professional assessments of Aleph's performance prior to October 7th. Aleph had petitioned the court in March against the convening of a committee to release him from his service obligations, leading to a court order halting the committee's meeting. In June, the court ruled that the process initiated by the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion, citing professional errors, malfunctions, and command responsibility, was lawful and within the military's authority.

The court rejected all of Aleph's claims, affirming the military's right to initiate the release of a soldier for professional and command failures. Following the ruling, the IDF proceeded with the administrative process. The advisory committee to the Head of the Manpower Directorate completed its work and presented its recommendations, leading to the final decision to release Aleph from service.
