Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Dismissed from IDF After October 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Thursday the dismissal of the Gaza Division's intelligence officer, referred to as Lieutenant Colonel Aleph, who served during the October 7th Hamas attacks. The decision follows a lengthy process examining his role and responsibility for the failures of that day.

In November 2023, the IDF Chief of Staff identified several senior commanders bearing command responsibility for the security lapses, including Lt. Col. Aleph. Consequently, an initiative was launched to terminate his military service.

The process involved a legal opinion from the Deputy Chief of Staff recommending the release of the officer from his service commitment. Lt. Col. Aleph appealed this recommendation to the court in March 2024, but his petition was denied in June 2024. The court ruled that the process to end his service, initiated due to professional errors and his command responsibility, was conducted legally and within full authority.

Following the court's decision, the IDF resumed administrative proceedings. An advisory committee to the Head of the Manpower Directorate recently completed its review and submitted recommendations, leading to the final decision to release the officer from his service commitment.
