IDF Ousts Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Over October 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday the final dismissal of the Gaza Division's intelligence officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Aleph, for his role in the failures leading up to the October 7th Hamas attacks. This decision follows a series of legal proceedings and a determination by the Chief of Staff from November of the previous year that Aleph bore command responsibility for the intelligence shortcomings.

In the months preceding his dismissal, Aleph engaged in a legal battle to prevent his removal from service. He had approached the court in March after the Deputy Chief of Staff recommended his discharge due to professional errors, operational failures, and command responsibility. The court ruled in June that the process initiated by the Deputy Chief of Staff was lawful, rejecting Aleph's claims and affirming the army's authority to discharge soldiers for professional and command failures.

During the night before the October 7th attack, Aleph reportedly arrived at the division's headquarters in Re'im without his personal weapon and went to sleep. He did not alert combat units or raise the alert level in the sector, despite unusual signs and urgent consultations within the army's high command. Aleph, the son of a retired senior officer and a graduate of the elite "Havazelet" program, was reportedly exposed to Hamas's detailed attack plan in May 2023. However, he dismissed warnings from an expert sergeant in Unit 8200 about the enemy practicing the plan, calling the breach scenario "completely imaginary."

The Turjeman Commission, which investigated the war's failures, unequivocally stated that the Gaza Division's intelligence failed to identify enemy changes and did not adequately raise the alert level, recommending Aleph's immediate dismissal. He was the only operational officer from October 7th to mount a significant legal challenge against his dismissal, refusing to accept command responsibility or resign voluntarily.
