IDF Prepares to Dismiss Gaza Division Intelligence Officer After Supreme Court Rejects Appeal
The case surrounding the dismissal of the Gaza Division intelligence officer, Lieutenant Colonel A, from the Israel Defense Forces is developing further. On November 23, 2023, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir decided to terminate the service of several officers, including Lt. Col. A, based on findings from a committee led by Major General Sami Turgeman. This committee investigated the events of October 7, 2023, and identified these officers as central figures responsible for the severe intelligence failure that allowed a Hamas attack into Israeli territory.
The intelligence officer was found to have been grossly negligent, contributing to the IDF's unpreparedness for the Hamas incursion. Following these findings, Lt. Gen. Zamir ordered the immediate dismissal of Lt. Col. A from all military service, including both active duty and reserves. This decision followed earlier actions by senior defense officials: Military Intelligence Directorate head Major General Shlomi Binder removed Lt. Col. A from his Gaza Division post, and Defense Minister Israel Katz barred him from any command or intelligence-related roles.
Despite these measures, Lt. Col. A has sought various legal and administrative avenues to delay his dismissal. His latest appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected about two weeks ago, affirming the Chief of Staff's decision. The IDF now indicates that a special committee will convene in the coming weeks to finalize the termination of Lt. Col. A's contract and end his employment.
This case highlights ongoing accountability efforts within the IDF following the October 7 attacks, focusing on senior officers' roles in the intelligence failure and the military's response to it.
