Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Dismissed Over October 7 Failures

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officially announced on Thursday the termination of service for Lieutenant Colonel A., who served as the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division during the October 7th Hamas attacks. The decision was made by the Head of the Manpower Directorate following a review of recommendations from an advisory committee and the Deputy Chief of Staff's opinion. The officer has filed a petition with the High Court of Justice against the decision to end his service.

Lieutenant Colonel A. was identified by the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, in November 2025 as bearing direct command responsibility for the events of October 7th, necessitating disciplinary action. His dismissal process was initiated then but was delayed for months due to the officer's claims and requests to postpone committee hearings. He had previously petitioned the court in March 2026 against the committee's convening, which temporarily halted proceedings and imposed a gag order on the case's details.

On June 30, 2026, the court dismissed his petition, ruling that the military acted within its authority. The ruling stated that military authorities are permitted to terminate the service of a soldier who failed professionally and command-wise, and that the process, based on the officer's professional errors prior to the war, was proper.

Following the court's decision, the administrative process resumed. The advisory committee reviewed investigation findings, professional opinions, and the officer's arguments, ultimately recommending his service termination. The Head of the Manpower Directorate accepted these recommendations and finalized the dismissal. The IDF stated that the officer was informed of the decision and retains the right to appeal to the Chief of Staff.
