Israel Braces for Rain and Cooler Temperatures Ahead of Yom Kippur

Following a period of hot and dry weather after mid-August rains, Israel's meteorological service has forecast precipitation for the upcoming weekend. Short-term showers are expected on Friday, September 18, primarily in the north and center of the country. While overall rainfall is anticipated to be moderate, some areas like the Western Galilee, the northern Mediterranean coast, and the Sharon region could see up to 15 mm. This level of rainfall is considered significant for mid-September, exceeding the long-term average.

The meteorological service also indicated that their models suggest further downpours in the coming weeks, with increased rainfall expected in October. "There is something to expect," stated the service. The forecast specifies that the rain might begin early Friday morning, mainly affecting northern areas and the coastal strip. Temperatures are predicted to drop sharply during the day, falling below seasonal averages, with potential for thunderstorms in the north and center. Winds are also expected to strengthen in most regions.

Conversely, the Dead Sea coast, Jordan Valley, and Arava Desert will experience high temperatures and humidity. Specific temperature ranges for September 18 include Jerusalem (20-16°C), Tel Aviv (23-30°C), Haifa (23-29°C), and Eilat (30-37°C).

On Saturday, September 19, conditions are expected to remain largely unchanged, with a possibility of brief, localized showers in the north and coastal areas, alongside variable cloudiness. Leading up to Yom Kippur on Sunday, September 20, a slight increase in temperatures to seasonal norms is anticipated. Monday, September 21, will see a further rise in temperature with no precipitation expected.
