Israel Police Launch Nationwide Road Safety Crackdown

The Israel Police are preparing for a large-scale, nationwide operation targeting traffic violations on Wednesday, September 9. The crackdown, which will commence early in the morning and continue until late evening, will involve hundreds of officers, patrol cars, and volunteers across urban and intercity routes. The operation aims to identify minor infractions and dangerous driving that poses a threat to life, according to Israel Hayom. Police will utilize a range of surveillance methods, including motorcycles, laser radar, cameras, drones, and helicopters, to monitor traffic from various vantage points. Special attention will be given to novice drivers, motorcyclists, and operators of heavy vehicles like trucks and buses. Highway 6 will see an intensified focus, with a dedicated unit monitoring heavy transport along its entire length. Police have identified high-risk accident zones where surveillance will be particularly stringent. Violations can be recorded by cameras and drones and transmitted to nearby patrol units, meaning drivers may be cited even if not directly observed by an officer. A similar operation in late July resulted in nearly 6,000 fines within 24 hours, with over a thousand drivers penalized for phone use and other distractions. Dozens of drivers also faced temporary license suspensions, and some vehicles were impounded. Drivers should also be aware that police have recently lowered the threshold for some stationary speed cameras in dangerous areas, meaning even minor speeding offenses may now result in fines. The specific locations of these cameras have not been disclosed.
