דובר צה"ל הודיע כי כוחותינו חיסלו בחאן יונס את מחמד סלימאן ביוק, מפקד בזרוע הצבאית של חמאס, אשר השתתף בפשיטה על שטח ישראל ב-7 באוקטובר. לפי הדיווח, ביוק פעל בתקופה האחרונה להטמנת מטענים ברחבי הרצועה במטרה לפגוע בכוחות צה"ל, וכן קידם מתווי טרור נגד כוחות ואזרחים ישראלים.

בנוסף, צוין כי ביוק פעל לשיקום יכולות ארגון הטרור חמאס ולהעלאת כשירותם של מחבלים, תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקות אש. חיסולו בוצע על מנת להסיר את האיום שהציב. כוחות צה"ל בפיקוד הדרום ממשיכים לפעול במרחב להסרת כל איום מיידי.
