דובר צה"ל הודיע כי צה"ל חיסל במרחב חאן יונס את מחמד סלימאן ביוק, מפקד בזרוע הצבאית של חמאס, שהשתתף בפשיטה על ישראל בטבח 7 באוקטובר. במהלך המלחמה, ובפרט לאחרונה, ביוק פעל להטמנת מטענים ברצועת עזה במטרה לפגוע בכוחות צה"ל, וקידם מתווי טרור נגד כוחותינו ואזרחים ישראלים. בנוסף, הוא פעל לשיקום יכולות חמאס והעלאת כשירות מחבלי הארגון, תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקת האש. חיסולו נועד להסיר את האיום שהציב. כוחות צה"ל בפיקוד הדרום פרוסים במרחב וימשיכו לפעול להסרת איומים מיידיים.
