Israeli President Pardons Ex-Soldier Elor Azaria
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has decided to grant a pardon to Elor Azaria, a former IDF soldier convicted of killing a neutralized terrorist, thereby canceling the remainder of his prison sentence. The decision was made "on the eve of Yom Kippur" to allow Azaria "to continue his life," Herzog stated.
The President's office announced that Herzog made the decision after "weighing all the circumstances of the case," and taking into account that Azaria had "served his sentence for his actions for many years." The statement emphasized that the president "considers the totality of circumstances, the time that has passed since the offense, and the expressed remorse sufficient grounds to allow Azaria to start life with a clean slate."
