President Grants Early Release for Ex-Soldier Azaria

President Isaac Herzog has signed an order shortening the period required for expunging criminal records, a decision that will benefit former IDF soldier Elor Azaria. The move comes despite opposition from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, but aligns with a request made by Minister of Intelligence Gila Gamliel. Gamliel promptly congratulated the President on his decision, calling it "correct, humane, and worthy."

Elor Azaria was convicted in 2017 of manslaughter for shooting and killing a Palestinian assailant who had already been subdued during a 2016 incident in Hebron. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and served the majority of his term before being released in May 2018. The expungement process typically takes five years, meaning Azaria would have been eligible to apply for his record to be cleared in May 2023. This new decision effectively reduces that waiting period.

The Chief of Staff's objection reportedly stemmed from concerns about setting a precedent that could undermine military discipline and the chain of command. However, the President's decision emphasizes a humanitarian approach, overriding the military's reservations. The case was highly controversial in Israel, dividing public opinion and sparking widespread debate about military conduct and accountability.
