President Herzog Grants Early End to Elor Azaria's Criminal Record

President Isaac Herzog has decided to shorten the criminal record period for Elor Azaria, who was convicted in a controversial shooting incident nearly a decade ago. The decision, announced on Saturday evening before Yom Kippur, comes after Azaria requested the early removal of his criminal record to move forward with his life. Herzog's office stated that the decision considered the significant time elapsed since the incident, Azaria's completion of his sentence, and the statute of limitations having passed for the offenses.

Azaria, now a father of two, had appealed to the president, emphasizing the importance of IDF values and his desire to raise his children according to them. He expressed regret for the severe consequences of the incident and stated his intention not to reopen the case. In his appeal, Azaria had previously described the shooting as an operational error in hindsight.

President Herzog also took into account the complex medical circumstances the Azaria family faced over the years and the changes in Elor Azaria's life. His sentence had previously been shortened by then-Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. The President's office stressed that this decision does not challenge the original verdict or legal proceedings, upholding the importance of the military justice system and the rule of law.

The move, which followed a recommendation from Defense Minister Israel Katz, aims to remove employment barriers for Azaria and allow him to continue his life without the stigma of a criminal record.
