President Herzog Grants Pardon to Elor Azaria, Allowing Criminal Record Expungement

President Isaac Herzog has signed an order shortening the period for criminal record expungement for Elor Azaria, a former IDF soldier convicted of manslaughter. The decision, made on the eve of Yom Kippur, aims to allow Azaria to "start a new chapter in his life" after serving his sentence and expressing remorse.

The President's office stated that after reviewing the circumstances, the passage of time, and Azaria's expressed regret, Herzog believes it is appropriate to grant him this opportunity. Key considerations included the significant time elapsed since the 2016 incident, Azaria having served his full prison sentence, the statute of limitations having passed for his offenses, his changed personal and family circumstances, and his desire to overcome employment barriers.

Azaria himself emphasized his respect for IDF values and his desire to raise his two young children accordingly, expressing sorrow for the severe consequences of the incident. He had previously stated that, in hindsight, the shooting was a operational mistake he would not have made.

This move was supported by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who formally requested the pardon in July. Katz argued that it was unreasonable for an exemplary soldier to continue paying a heavy price a decade later, sending a negative message to soldiers facing danger. He highlighted Azaria's service as a combat medic, the complex operational circumstances, and the personal toll he has endured.

President Herzog stressed that his decision does not challenge the legal proceedings or the military court's verdict, emphasizing the importance of the justice system and the principle of "purity of arms." He views the pardon as an act of grace, not an appellate review. The President accepted Minister Katz's recommendation to expedite Azaria's criminal record expungement.
