President Herzog Expunges Criminal Record of Ex-Soldier Elor Azaria

Herzog stated that the decision followed a thorough review of all circumstances and considerations related to the request. He noted that Azaria had already borne the consequences of his actions for many years. The President believes that the totality of the circumstances, the passage of time, and the remorse Azaria has expressed justify allowing him to start a new chapter.
Azaria was imprisoned after fatally shooting a neutralized Palestinian attacker during his military service in the Israel Defense Forces.
