נשיא המדינה יצחק הרצוג החליט לבטל את יתרת עונשו של החייל אלאור אזריה, שהורשע בהריגת מחבל מנוטרל. ההחלטה התקבלה לקראת יום הכיפורים, במטרה לאפשר לאזריה "להמשיך את חייו".

בהודעת בית הנשיא נמסר כי הרצוג שקל את כל נסיבות המקרה, וכן את העובדה שאזריה ריצה "שנים ארוכות" את עונשו. עוד הודגש כי הנשיא "סבור כי מכלול הנסיבות, הזמן שחלף מאז ביצוע העבירה, והחרטה שהובעה, מהווים בסיס מספיק על מנת לאפשר לאזריה לפתוח דף חדש בחייו".
