Former IDF Soldier Dies in Paragliding Accident in Colombia

A 21-year-old former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier died in Colombia when his paraglider crashed near the city of Medellin around noon local time. The paraglider, carrying the Israeli and a Colombian pilot, suddenly lost control and plummeted into a wooded area near a cliff. The young Israeli was pronounced dead at the scene. The Colombian pilot sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized, according to Ynet.

The deceased was in Colombia as part of a "big trip," a common journey for many Israelis after completing their military service. Preliminary findings suggest that adverse weather conditions, including strong winds recorded shortly before the crash, may have been a contributing factor to the loss of control. Investigators from Colombia's Attorney General's investigative unit, CTI, are looking into the exact circumstances.

Authorities also inspected the company that provided the paragliding service. The company's documentation was found to be in order and compliant with legal requirements. Despite the accident, the company will not be shut down, but the investigation into the precise cause of the crash will continue.

Upon learning of the death, Rabbi Levi Vanunu, a Chabad representative in Medellin, began coordinating with the Israeli embassy and local authorities to arrange for the repatriation of the body for burial in Israel.
