Israeli Daycare Worker Sentenced to Seven Years for Abusing Toddlers

A daycare worker in Netanya, Israel, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for abusing and assaulting 12 toddlers under her care. Shelly Sheinker, who worked at the "Transparent Garden" daycare, was convicted of numerous offenses against infants aged seven months to a year and a half.

According to the indictment, Sheinker committed approximately 60 acts of abuse. These included hitting, kicking, slapping, pulling hair, and spraying cleaning fluid at the children. The court also ordered her to pay 300,000 shekels in compensation to the families of the victims.

The Central District Court in Lod handed down the sentence on Monday, also imposing a suspended sentence and the fine. The prosecution had sought a ten-year prison term and stated they would review the verdict to consider an appeal.

Video footage from the daycare's security cameras served as key evidence, documenting Sheinker's daily mistreatment. The recordings showed her hitting, slapping, pulling the hair of, pinching, and roughly grabbing the faces of crying infants. In more severe instances, she reportedly threw babies onto mattresses, kicked them, and used a chair to push a crawling toddler. She also sprayed cleaning agents towards the helpless children.

In their ruling, the judges emphasized the extreme severity of Sheinker's actions, particularly given her position of trust and responsibility for the children's safety. They noted that despite a trend towards harsher sentences for educators, violence against infants persists. The court also considered Sheinker's personal circumstances as detailed in a probation report when deciding on the seven-year sentence.

Prosecutors expressed disappointment with the sentence, with attorney Ofir Fahima stating that Sheinker acted systematically and cruelly, humiliating and terrorizing the vulnerable toddlers. She reiterated the prosecution's stance that such severe breaches of trust warrant the maximum penalty and that an appeal would be considered. The prosecution also offered support to the parents, hoping the verdict would allow them and their children to begin healing.
