Israeli Daycare Worker Sentenced to 7 Years for Abusing Toddlers

A central district court in Israel has sentenced a former daycare worker, Shelly Sheinker, to seven years in prison for systematically abusing 12 infants and toddlers. Sheinker, who worked at "HaGan HaShakuf" (The Transparent Garden) daycare in Netanya, was convicted of numerous counts of severe assault and abuse against children aged seven months to 18 months.

The abuse, captured on security cameras on approximately 60 occasions, included throwing sleeping infants, hitting, shaking, dragging a chair over a crawling baby, and spraying cleaning agents. The prosecution had sought a 10-year sentence, emphasizing the systematic and cruel nature of the abuse and the vulnerability of the victims.

"Shelly Sheinker committed the acts of assault and abuse systematically and cruelly, while humiliating, degrading, exploiting her authority, and instilling terror in young and helpless infants," stated attorney Ofir Fahima of the Central District Prosecutor's Office. "While entrusted with their safety, she exploited their weakness and harmed them." The prosecution will review the sentence and consider an appeal.

The court highlighted that despite a clear trend toward harsher sentencing, daycare workers continue to commit severe acts of violence against young children. However, the judges took Sheinker's personal circumstances into account when determining the seven-year sentence. In addition to prison time, Sheinker was ordered to pay NIS 300,000 (approximately $81,000 USD) in compensation to the victims' families.
