Israeli Daycare Worker Sentenced to Seven Years for Child Abuse

A daycare worker in Netanya, Israel, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for abusing young children under her care. Shelly Sheinker was convicted of nine counts of child abuse by a caretaker, 33 counts of assaulting a helpless minor by a caretaker causing actual bodily harm, and two counts of aggravated assault. All the offenses occurred over a single month, between May 29 and June 27, 2024, during which she worked at the daycare on 15 occasions.

Sheinker was acquitted of numerous other charges, including aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm, due to legal reasoning that the assault charges were subsumed within the broader abuse charges. For instance, in one indictment, she was convicted of child abuse and six counts of assault causing bodily harm against a 16-month-old toddler. These incidents included hitting the child, causing her to fall from a chair, pulling her arms and dropping her, and forcefully pushing her, resulting in pain and distress.

In addition to the prison sentence, Sheinker received a suspended sentence and was ordered to pay tens of thousands of shekels in compensation to the victims' families, up to 10,000 shekels per complainant.
