Daycare Worker Sentenced to Seven Years for Abusing 12 Toddlers

A district court in central Israel has sentenced Shelly Sheinker, an assistant at the "Transparent Kindergarten" in Netanya, to seven years in prison for multiple acts of abuse and assault against 12 toddlers. The children, aged between seven months and a year and a half, were subjected to various forms of violence, including being pushed, hit, having their hair pulled, and being ignored when crying. Sheinker also kicked, pinched, and grabbed the toddlers' faces, and in some instances, threw them forcefully, even while they slept. She also sprayed cleaning fluid at them and used a chair to push a crawling infant.

The court in Lod handed down the sentence on Monday, also imposing a suspended sentence and ordering Sheinker to pay a total of 300,000 shekels in compensation to the parents. The prosecution, which had sought a ten-year sentence, stated they would consider appealing the verdict.

Sheinker was convicted of numerous offenses, including child abuse by a caregiver, assaulting a helpless individual causing actual harm, and aggravated assault. The indictment detailed approximately 60 separate incidents, many of which were captured on security cameras. The court emphasized the severity of offenses committed against children by those entrusted with their care and well-being, noting that such serious acts by caregivers continue to occur despite a trend toward harsher sentencing.

"Shelly Sheinker committed the acts of assault and abuse systematically and cruelly, while humiliating, degrading, exploiting her authority, and instilling fear in tender and helpless toddlers who cannot defend themselves or express in words what was done to them," said attorney Ofir Fahima from the Central District Attorney's Office. She added that Sheinker exploited the children's vulnerability, harming them physically and mentally. The prosecution had requested a ten-year sentence to send a strong message against harming helpless children and violating parental trust.

The court took Sheinker's personal circumstances, as detailed in a probation service report, into consideration when determining the seven-year sentence. Following the sentencing, prosecutors offered support to the toddlers' parents.
