Ed Sheeran Concert Features Anti-Israel Remarks by Rapper Macklemore

Rapper Macklemore sparked controversy during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which was part of a concert headlined by Ed Sheeran and attended by approximately 80,000 people. Macklemore used his opening set to deliver an anti-Israel speech, calling for "Free Palestine" and performing his song "Hind's Hall." The song's backdrop featured images from Gaza, and it was written in tribute to campus protest movements, taking its name from the Hamilton Hall at Columbia University that protesters occupied.

The Israeli-American Council (IAC) has launched a petition urging Sheeran and his tour management to remove Macklemore from the remaining tour dates. The IAC stated that the platform of a concert should not be used to promote a one-sided political agenda with biased messages and controversial claims presented as fact to a large audience.

"It was an Ed Sheeran show, not a political rally," the IAC emphasized in their petition. They questioned the appropriateness of a warm-up act using a global concert platform for a one-sided political agenda, especially when the message relies on selective imagery and lacks context or complexity. The organization is calling for clear boundaries on the use of the tour's stage for political messaging, asserting that "Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from responsibility."

The IAC is also encouraging the public to contact Live Nation, a major concert promoter, to demand action regarding the incident.
