Israeli-American Group Demands Ed Sheeran Drop Macklemore Over Anti-Israel Remarks
The Israeli-American Community (IAC), representing over 150,000 members, has called on singer Ed Sheeran and Live Nation to remove rapper Macklemore from his current "Loop Tour." The demand follows Macklemore's performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he addressed a crowd of over 80,000.
During his opening set, Macklemore delivered a speech critical of Israel, chanting "Free Palestine" and performing his song "Hind's Hall." The song, inspired by the occupation of Hamilton Hall at Columbia University during campus protests, was accompanied by visuals of Gaza and one-sided political slogans displayed on large screens.
The IAC criticized the use of the concert platform for political messaging, stating in their letter, "The issue is not the right to hold political views, but where the line is drawn when an opening act uses a global platform to advance a one-sided agenda without any context. Freedom of speech is not freedom from responsibility: your stage is your responsibility."
The organization views Macklemore's actions as a cynical exploitation of the musical event to promote a specific political agenda without providing broader context.
