Desalination Plants South of Hadera Shut Down Due to Weather

All desalination plants located south of the city of Hadera in Israel have been temporarily shut down. Industry sources indicated that the shutdown is not the result of a cyberattack, but rather due to unusual weather conditions impacting the quality of Mediterranean seawater. This disruption follows a morning of unexpected rainfall in central Israel, particularly in the Gush Dan region, which contrasted with earlier expectations of wider precipitation.

The prevailing assessment is that the abnormal weather patterns have degraded the seawater quality to a point where it is affecting the desalination process. Officials from Mekorot (the national water company) and the Water Authority have not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.

The shutdown occurs against a backdrop of heightened concerns over potential cyber threats to Israel's water infrastructure. Earlier in August, the National Cyber Directorate had warned of Iranian attempts to target the country's water systems, following reports of cyberattacks on water facilities in the United States attributed to Iran. Despite these concerns, the industry source explicitly stated that the current shutdown is weather-related and not a cyber incident.

The National Cyber Directorate had previously acknowledged that Israel faces daily cyberattacks across various sectors and has historically been a target for Iranian attempts to disrupt its water sector. However, they also noted that, in collaboration with international partners, significant damage to the cyber domain has been prevented.
