Ireland Registers Defender as Goalkeeper Due to Player Boycott

The Republic of Ireland national football team was forced into an unusual squad registration maneuver for their match against Israel due to a player boycott. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu announced he would not participate in the game, citing personal beliefs. This decision led the Irish team to register defender Jimmy Dunne as a goalkeeper on the official UEFA roster.

According to UEFA regulations, teams must list three goalkeepers for a match. With Bazunu unavailable and only two other recognized goalkeepers, the Irish squad had to find a technical solution. Dunne, a defender for Queens Park Rangers, was listed as the third goalkeeper, assigned jersey number 23 for the registration purposes.

The situation arose after a tumultuous 24 hours for the Irish team. Bazunu's refusal to play against Israel, which he stated was a personal decision based on his worldview, prompted extensive discussions and a vote within the squad. Ultimately, the team decided to proceed with the match.

Dunne's registration as a goalkeeper is purely a procedural measure to comply with UEFA's rules and does not indicate he is expected to play in goal. The team's other goalkeepers, Caoimhin Kelleher and Max O'Leary, participated in the final training session, while Bazunu did not.
