צה"ל הודיע כי חיסל בדרום רצועת עזה את מוחמד סלימאן ביוק, מחבל חמאס ומפקד בזרוע הצבאית של הארגון. לפי הדיווח, ביוק השתתף בפשיטה לשטח ישראל בטבח 7 באוקטובר. במהלך המלחמה, פעל המחבל להטמנת מטענים ברצועת עזה במטרה לפגוע בכוחות צה"ל, וכן קידם מתווי טרור נגד כוחותינו ואזרחים ישראלים. בנוסף, הוא פעל לשיקום יכולות הארגון ולהעלאת כשירות מחבלי חמאס, תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקת האש.
