IDF Eliminates Hamas Commander Involved in Holding Seven Israeli Hostages
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Thursday that an airstrike late last week in Gaza City eliminated Mahmoud Abd al-Fatah Awad, a commander in Hamas's military wing. According to the IDF, Awad was involved during the war in holding seven Israeli hostages who were abducted on October 7, 2023. These hostages were reportedly held by Awad in a tunnel in the Gaza City area.
The hostages identified by the IDF as having been held by Awad are Daniela Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbacher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor. The IDF stated that Awad had recently been advancing terror operations against IDF forces and Israeli civilians, and worked to restore Hamas's capabilities while systematically violating the ceasefire.
The military stated the strike was intended to neutralize the threat he posed. The IDF also noted that approximately a year ago, on the holiday of Hoshana Rabbah, all living hostages held by Hamas in the Strip were released, and later the bodies of all murdered hostages were returned, concluding a painful chapter in recent Israeli history.
