IDF Kills Hamas Commander Who Held Seven Israeli Hostages in Gaza Tunnel
The Israeli military announced Sunday that an airstrike late last week killed Mahmoud Abdel Fattah Awad, a Hamas military wing commander in the Gaza City area. The strike was carried out to neutralize an immediate threat after Awad systematically violated the ceasefire agreement.
During the war, Awad was actively involved in holding seven Israeli hostages: Daniela Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbacher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor. These hostages were kept under his supervision in an underground tunnel in the Gaza City region.
The IDF stated that Awad had recently advanced terror plans against Israeli forces and civilians and worked to restore Hamas's military capabilities. Southern Command forces remain deployed in the area according to the agreement and will continue to operate to remove any threats.
