IDF Eliminates Senior Hamas Commander Involved in Holding Israeli Hostages
The Israeli military announced Thursday that it has eliminated Mahmoud Awad, a senior Hamas commander, in an airstrike in the Gaza City area late last week. According to the IDF, Awad was directly involved in holding seven Israeli hostages in harsh underground conditions within a tunnel. The hostages identified were Daniela Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbacher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor, may God avenge their souls.
Security officials noted that Awad had recently been planning further terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians, while also working to rebuild Hamas's capabilities and systematically violating ceasefire understandings. Given the immediate threat he posed, a targeted airstrike was deemed necessary for his elimination.
The IDF's Southern Command stated that its forces remain deployed in the area according to agreements and will continue to act decisively to remove any immediate threats to the security of the state and its residents.
