IDF Kills Hamas Commander Responsible for Holding Seven Hostages
The Israeli military announced it killed Hamas commander Mahmoud Abdel Fattah Awad in Gaza City last weekend. Awad was involved in holding seven Israeli hostages in an underground tunnel in the Gaza City area. The hostages were identified as Daniela Gilboa, Karina Aryev, Doron Steinbacher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor.
According to the IDF, Awad had recently been advancing terror plans against Israeli forces and civilians and was working to restore the terrorist organization's capabilities, systematically violating the ceasefire. He was eliminated in an airstrike to neutralize the threat he posed.
Forces in the Southern Command are deployed in the area and will continue to operate to remove any immediate threats, the IDF stated. The military also noted that this operation follows the killing of Hamas finance department head Muhammad Abu Alwan in Khan Younis the previous day. The IDF and Shin Bet have been targeting Hamas's financial infrastructure, which they say has sustained the group's rule in the Strip.
