IDF Kills Hamas Commander Involved in Holding Seven Israeli Hostages
The Israeli military (IDF) announced Thursday the elimination of Mahmoud Abdel Fattah Awad, a commander in Hamas's armed wing, who was allegedly involved in holding seven Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip. The IDF stated that Awad was killed in an airstrike last weekend in the Gaza City area.
According to the Israeli army, Awad participated in the detention of hostages Daniela Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbrecher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, and Eitan Mor. These seven hostages were reportedly held in an underground tunnel in the Gaza City region. The IDF did not specify Awad's exact role in their captivity or the duration of their detention under his responsibility.
The army further claimed that Awad was recently planning attacks against IDF forces and Israeli civilians. He was also reportedly involved in efforts to rebuild Hamas's military and operational capabilities, which the IDF asserts constituted a systematic violation of the ceasefire.
The IDF stated that Awad was targeted from the air to "eliminate the threat he posed." Israeli forces remain deployed in the area and will continue to act against any immediate threats to Israeli soldiers or civilians.
