Carmiel Residents Told to Boil Tap Water Due to Bacterial Contamination

The Carmiel Municipality has instructed residents to boil all tap water before consumption, cooking, preparing medicine, or brushing teeth, following the detection of bacteria in the municipal water supply. The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Health, remains in effect until further notice.

Routine tests revealed the contamination, prompting immediate action from the municipality and the local water corporation, "Ein Kerem." They are conducting additional water sampling and are working to alter the water supply method to restore normalcy as quickly as possible. The discovery of bacteria in drinking water systems can indicate a potential contamination that may lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations.

Authorities emphasize that even water filtered through home systems, such as Brita filters or water bars, must be boiled. However, water can still be used for bathing and sanitary purposes without boiling. The municipality has also addressed concerns about potential shortages, assuring residents that there is no need to hoard bottled water, as tap water is safe for use after boiling.

The process of lifting the advisory requires multiple successful laboratory tests, with results typically available within 24 hours of sampling. In parallel with testing, municipal reservoirs have been disconnected, and efforts are underway to establish a direct water supply to the city to stabilize the system and minimize risks. Educational institutions will continue to receive water as needed, with the municipality distributing water to schools and educational facilities.
