Ed Sheeran Addresses Macklemore's Removal from Tour Amidst Artist Protests

Ed Sheeran has broken his silence regarding the removal of rapper Macklemore from his "+ - = ÷ x" (Mathematics) Tour in North America. Macklemore was dismissed after delivering a political speech during his opening sets in New Jersey, calling for the "liberation of Palestine." In response to Macklemore's removal, four artists slated to perform on the tour, including Finneas, Billie Eilish's brother and collaborator, announced their withdrawal in solidarity.

Sheeran stated that the decision to remove Macklemore was not his own, but rather a directive from the venues. He explained that after Macklemore's remarks, the venues threatened to cancel upcoming shows if he continued as the opening act. Sheeran engaged in extensive negotiations with venue representatives, including Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, and producers, attempting to find a resolution. However, the venues' decision was final, and Macklemore's contract was with the promoters, not Sheeran directly.

Sheeran expressed his dismay over the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling the suffering on both sides a "human tragedy." He emphasized his commitment to using his platform to unite people and create a safe space, rather than a political forum, especially given his audience includes many young people and children. He acknowledged Macklemore's right to express his beliefs but advocated for different approaches to achieving peace.

Following Sheeran's statement and Macklemore's dismissal, Irish artist Aaron Rowe, Danish band Lukas Graham, the band Beoga, and Finneas all announced their departures from the tour. Finneas tweeted his support for Palestine and the Palestinian people, stating artists should not be silenced for speaking out against oppression. Rowe cited his Irish background and understanding of occupation and violence as reasons for his withdrawal, criticizing billionaires for silencing legitimate voices against what he termed Israel's "genocide."

The controversy began after Macklemore's September 4th performance, where he explicitly called for "Free Palestine" and displayed images of destruction in Gaza during his song "Hind's Hall." This led to a petition urging Sheeran to remove him from the tour. Messina Touring Group, the promoter for the U.S. leg, confirmed Macklemore's removal, stating it was necessary to avoid canceling the entire tour and disappointing hundreds of thousands of fans.
