Macklemore Removed From Ed Sheeran Tour After Pro-Palestinian Remarks

Rapper Macklemore has been removed from the remaining dates of Ed Sheeran's "+-" Tour in the United States, following his pro-Palestinian statements during a recent concert. The decision was announced by the production company Messina Touring Group, stating that Macklemore would not perform at the eight scheduled shows.

The move comes about a week after the Israeli-American Council (IAC) launched a petition against Macklemore's participation in the tour. The petition gained significant traction, with tens of thousands of signatures and millions of social media impressions, drawing attention from American and international media.

Macklemore had made the controversial remarks, including shouting "Free Palestine," during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he addressed over 80,000 attendees. He also performed his song "Hind's Hall," with images from Gaza displayed in the background.

Messina Touring Group explained that stadiums for the upcoming shows had informed them that Macklemore would not be permitted to perform. The company stated that the situation could have led to the cancellation of the entire tour, affecting hundreds of thousands of fans. "After discussions with the relevant parties, Macklemore will not be performing," the company said.

The IAC praised the decision, asserting that the Israeli-American community's unified voice was heard. They argued that freedom of speech does not equate to freedom from responsibility and that concert stages should not be used for anti-Israel propaganda. The IAC further elaborated that presenting the conflict in a one-sided manner, omitting the October 7th Hamas attack, and solely blaming the Jewish state crosses the line between legitimate political criticism and antisemitism.

Macklemore himself had reportedly stated during the MetLife performance that one reason he wanted to join the tour was the opportunity to stand before stadium crowds and say "Free Palestine." However, with the venues now refusing his participation, his involvement in the tour has concluded.
