Ed Sheeran Denies Responsibility for Macklemore's Tour Removal

British singer Ed Sheeran has broken his silence regarding the removal of rapper Macklemore from his ongoing tour, stating the decision was not his. Sheeran explained that following Macklemore's political statements during opening performances in New Jersey on September 4th and 5th, venues threatened to cancel future shows if Macklemore continued as the opening act. Macklemore had used his stage time to call for "Free Palestine," expressing solidarity with people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, which led to some audience members leaving.

Sheeran stated he spent days attempting to find a resolution that would allow Macklemore to remain on the tour, engaging in discussions with various parties, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, producers, and activists from both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, these efforts were unsuccessful. Sheeran clarified that Macklemore's contract was with the producer, not directly with him, and that the final decision to remove Macklemore was made by the producer.

Sheeran expressed his distress over the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling the suffering on both sides a human tragedy and condemning the numerous wars causing immense pain globally. He emphasized that he did not want to cancel the tour, which would disappoint fans and impact the livelihoods of his crew and musicians.

Addressing criticism about his own public silence on political matters, Sheeran stated that while he holds personal views on the conflict, he chooses not to express them publicly at his shows. He believes his audience, which includes young people and children from diverse backgrounds, does not expect a political forum during his concerts. He respects Macklemore's choice to use his platform for his views, noting there are multiple paths to achieving peace.

Macklemore had previously claimed that Kraft worked with other stadium owners to orchestrate his removal. The production company Messina Touring Group officially announced Macklemore's departure on Monday. Sheeran concluded by reiterating his attempts to mediate and find a solution, asserting his personal values and identity as an artist.
