Ed Sheeran Denies Responsibility for Removing Macklemore From Tour

Singer Ed Sheeran has issued a statement clarifying that he was not responsible for the removal of rapper Macklemore from his current tour, attributing the decision to the tour's producers.

In a detailed Instagram post, Sheeran stated that he had spent a week attempting to find a compromise that would allow Macklemore to continue performing, but these efforts were unsuccessful. He explained that venue operators threatened to cancel upcoming shows if Macklemore remained on the bill, citing the manner in which the rapper conveyed his message during his performances.

Sheeran emphasized that Macklemore's contract was with the producer, not directly with him. He expressed his distress over the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling the suffering on both sides a human tragedy and stating that no war is acceptable. He also noted his personal views on the conflict, explaining that his public silence does not reflect a lack of care or personal convictions, nor does it mean he doesn't support peace efforts in his own way.

The singer mentioned that Macklemore had requested to join the tour last year, and Sheeran agreed out of respect for him as an artist. He allowed Macklemore to choose his own setlist, similar to other opening acts. However, after Macklemore's performances in New Jersey, Sheeran was informed by venue representatives that future shows would be canceled if the rapper continued to participate.

Sheeran stated he engaged in extensive discussions, including with Robert Kraft, producers, and activists from both sides, to find a mutually agreeable solution, but the decision to remove Macklemore remained. He also explained that he did not want to disappoint fans or abandon his crew, opening acts, and musicians who rely on the tour for their livelihood. He acknowledged Macklemore's determination to express his beliefs and stated that different approaches to achieving peace are valid.
