Treasury Legal Advisor Backs Fuel Price Cut Proposal
The Israeli Treasury's legal advisor, Dudi Kofel, has recommended that the Attorney General approve a proposal by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to reduce fuel prices. In a legal opinion submitted to the Ministry of Justice, Kofel acknowledged that the proposal to halve the fuel tax by half a shekel contradicts the professional stance within the Treasury and raises concerns it might be politically motivated due to upcoming elections.
Despite these reservations, Kofel concluded that there are no legal impediments to approving the measure. He cited the need to alleviate the cost of living and pointed to similar actions taken in Israel in 2022 and in other countries as precedents.
The final decision on whether to implement the fuel tax reduction now rests with the Attorney General.
